Comparison of Heater Types
Herschel Far Infrared Panels V Fossil Fuel Boilers
As technology changes in the world of heating, naturally comparisons will be made against existing and traditional heating systems.
Comparisons with Oil and Gas central heating systems currently seem more relevant in retro-fit of existing systems. This is mainly due to new building installations are already moving away from these out dated heating systems.
Please take a look at the examples below of comparisons against previous gas and oil systems. (Provided by our manufacturing partner)
====================================================

- Heat transfer – Radiant (Infrared) over convective systems and the increased storage capacity of heating Thermal Mass.
- Ability to create effective ‘Zones’ – Regardless if a domestic or commercial property this can have a dramatic saving of heating specific areas of an environment. Not heating the environment in its entirety if it is not warranted. (Large open spaces)
- Purchase and install costs – Installing a new wet system is not cheap! As an example, the ease of installing Far Infrared panels into say, an extension, with an existing boiler system will be considerably cheaper than extending a wet system into the extension.
- Hidden costs – This is mainly broken down to annual on-going maintenance and servicing costs for maximum efficiency. Also, it is a valid argument that boiler systems consume a significant amount of electricity, that is often overlooked, that should be factored into operating costs which can add £60 – £80 per annum. (Running time dependent)
- A retrofit of a new boiler into an existing system should (in theory) be relatively cheap. However, do consider the following potential costs:
- Modern condensing boilers may require a retrofit of radiators to maximise efficiencies claimed.
- A properly serviced modern boilers lifespan is between 10-12 years with considerable degradation on efficiency. (Herschel Panels should never need replacing).
- Potential changes and re-routing of pipework and wiring to accommodate ‘new’ boiler.
- Switching a ‘like for like’ boiler to operate on current system will be relatively cheap! But, consider the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) running and maintenance costs will remain the same (Variable of energy costs) as the previous 10 or more years and the next 10 years when you will have to replace.
- You will still be heating convectively, which as we know is not the most efficient way of heating and will not get the benefits of ‘comfort’ heating that you receive from your Far Infrared heating system.
